What Is Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) — And Why Every Grappler Should Be Using It

You shower after training. You wash your gi. You think you're doing everything right. But in the minutes between stepping off the mat and getting into the shower, bacteria are already beginning to colonise your skin — and that window is where infections are born.

Enter Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl): one of the most powerful, scientifically validated antifungal compounds available — and one of the most underused tools in an athlete's hygiene arsenal.


What Is Hypochlorous Acid?

Hypochlorous acid is an acid with the chemical formula HOCl. It forms naturally when chlorine dissolves in water, and — crucially — it is the same compound your own immune system produces. When your white blood cells (neutrophils) detect a pathogen, they generate HOCl via a process called the oxidative burst to destroy bacteria, viruses, and fungi on contact.

In other words, HOCl isn't a synthetic chemical. It's a molecule your body already trusts.

Modern electrolysis technology now allows HOCl to be produced in stable, sprayable form at concentrations effective enough to kill pathogens on skin and surfaces — without the toxicity or irritation associated with bleach or alcohol-based sanitisers.


The Science: How HOCl Kills Bacteria and Fungi

HOCl works through a mechanism called oxidative disruption. When it contacts a microbial cell, it:

  2. Oxidises critical proteins and enzymes — disrupting the metabolic processes the cell needs to survive

Peer-reviewed studies have demonstrated HOCl's efficacy against a broad spectrum of pathogens relevant to combat sports athletes, including:

  • Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA)
  • Trichophyton rubrum (ringworm / athlete's foot)
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Candida albicans (fungal skin infections)
  • Herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) — responsible for herpes gladiatorum

A 2019 study published in the Journal of Wound Care found HOCl solutions to be effective against biofilms — the protective layers bacteria form on skin and surfaces that make them resistant to standard cleaning agents. This is particularly relevant for mat hygiene and skin infections that have already begun to establish.


The Critical Window: Why Timing Matters

Here's the biology that every grappler needs to understand.

When bacteria land on your skin, they don't immediately cause infection. There is a lag phase — a window of time during which the bacteria are present on the skin surface but have not yet adhered to and penetrated the skin barrier. This is the period of inoculation: the process by which bacteria transition from surface contamination to active infection.

Research suggests this window can be as short as 20–60 minutes for highly virulent strains in compromised skin conditions — exactly the scenario after a hard training session, where micro-abrasions, sweat, and heat create ideal conditions for bacterial adhesion.
